Among my own 'hoop' list I have 'Is there clear evidence that this person has the transferable skills to be equal with or better than the person they replace?'

Also: 'what makes this person a fit with the current colleagues and an enhancement? What now becomes possible?'

The 'look in the eye' thing is cultural. For some cultural groups eye contact with a 'superior' is a decided 'NO' so to penalise someone for that may mean passing up an excellent employee.

Totally agree with you about grads. There's no magic in a degree.

Thanks Allan. I am enjoying the heck out of this, hearing back from good people like you. Regarding your thoughts about the lack of goals and processes out there, I remember the day I "got" the idea that the solution to all my problems was incredibly mundane...see the world as collection of independent systems, create written procedures, and then get my staff to vlimb on board. Just after this came to me, I realized that NONE of my competitors were willing to tackle such a mundane solution for their own personal nightmares. It's the one thing that stills shocks me and I've been shocked a lot. Allan, can you make it to the boot camp in November? It would be good to meet you in person. -sam

Hi Sam - more great, practical, sensible real-world advice. It's even better knowing that you live this at your company every day. I think that if more of our corporate leaders took responsibility for ensuring that the goals and processes of their companies were clear I'd have a lot fewer people coming to me asking how to figure out "what do I do next?"
